How to Clean Vent Covers: Tips from the Pros

When was the last time you cleaned your HVAC vent covers? These often overlooked fixtures can collect dust, dirt and allergens that not only affect your air quality but also your system’s performance. Regularly cleaning your vent covers is a simple way to maintain a healthier home environment and keep your HVAC system running efficiently.

Understanding the benefits of clean vents and how to clean vent covers is a step toward fresher, cleaner air for you and your family.

Cleaning Wall & Ceiling Vents

Wall and ceiling registers are a common choice for HVAC systems, especially in warmer climates or multi-level buildings. Since they’re above ground level, these vents are less likely to collect dust, dirt or debris compared to floor vents. Cleaning and adjusting ceiling vents requires a ladder, making it less convenient for regular maintenance or directional adjustments.  If you have high ceilings and hard-to-reach vent covers, an extendable duster will help you clean without having to pull out a ladder. To clean your wall and ceiling registers, be sure to turn off your HVAC system first. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the vent covers. To remove excess dirt, remove vents and scrub vent covers with a soft-bristled brush and warm, soapy water. Let air dry. It is suggested by the American Cleaning Institute that vent covers be wiped down monthly and a receive a deeper clean once or twice a year.

Cleaning Floor Vents

Floor vents are commonly found in older homes or homes in colder climates as warm air, which naturally rises, is best distributed from the lowest part of the home. They are more susceptible to collecting and accumulating dust, dirt and debris, especially in high-traffic areas. If you have children or pets, you run the risk that things may get dropped into the floor vents resulting in additional cleaning and/or maintenance. To clean floor registers, remove the vent and use a vacuum cleaner’s hose attachment to remove any loose dirt, dust or debris. Wipe the vent with a cloth or scrub with a soft brush for stubborn grime. After a thorough cleaning, consider installing a floor register net that traps pet hair, bugs and other loose items. Since floor vents naturally collect more debris due to gravity, they should be cleaned more frequently—ideally on a monthly basis.

Cleaning Large Air Return Vents

Air return vents often have a grid or slatted design to protect the ductwork and to keep out debris. Because these types of vents pull air from the room into the HVAC system, they also draw in dust, pet hair, lint and other airborne particles. Over time, these particles settle on the slats, creating visible dirt and grime. Air return vents can be cleaned without removing them by using a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment or a crevice tool. For a more thorough cleaning, unscrew the vent and remove it from the wall. In a large sink or outside, begin by using a mild detergent and a soft cloth for both sides of the vent. Next, use a large (but soft) scrub brush and a garden hose to rinse. Clean grilles every three to six months as part of your system maintenance.
