Troubleshooting Air Duct Issues
The air ducts in your home are a vital part of keeping your home cool in the summer—and warm in the winter. If you have unusually high summer and winter utility bills, your house has hot and cold spots or your vents don’t seem to have air flowing, there could be an issue with your ducts. Here’s a guide to troubleshooting common duct issues.
Check the air vents in your home
Make sure nothing is physically blocking the vent, such as furniture. Rearrange anything that is preventing air from flowing out of the vent, and clear off any dust or debris that may have accumulated. If the vent itself is not blocked, but air is still not flowing, there may be something obstructing the duct. If you are able to spot any physical obstructions inside the vent, remove them. If you are unable to see or remove the obstruction, enlist the help of a professional.
Replace your air filter
If your air filter is dirty and blocked with debris, it could be circulating polluted air, or preventing air from properly circulating in your home. Most air filters need to be replaced after one to three months. Check your filter to see how often it should be replaced. Chances are, if you can’t remember the last time you replaced it, it’s time for a new one.
Make sure ductwork has no leaks
To ensure your unit is delivering the most air possible, you may want to check your ducts for rips, tears, or gaps in the sealant. In the case of a rip or a tear, you may be able to repair the duct work yourself, but in most cases, it’s best to have a professional repair or replace the duct or sealant.
