Need A New AC Unit? Here’s How You Know It’s Time for a Replacement

If your air conditioner is making funny noises, costing you money in regular repairs or is at least 10 years old, it may be time to think about purchasing a new system. Like managing the cost of keeping a high-mileage car on the road, you may be tempted to slap a band-aid on your old unit to avoid purchasing a new AC unit. However, it could be costing you more in the long run. Here’s why.

Benefits of a New AC Unit

Newer HVAC systems are good for your family, your wallet and the environment because they’re more efficient. One of the more common standards for energy efficient HVAC systems is the SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This is the measure of efficiency used to rate the cooling process of air conditioner and heat pump systems. The higher the SEER, the greater the efficiency and savings.

In January 2015, the U.S. Department of Energy enacted new minimum efficiency rating guidelines, which state all new products must have a 13 SEER or higher. Newer guidelines, which go into effect this year, require residential systems in the Southeast to have a minimum required SEER of 15. At Barineau, we offer systems that can achieve SEER ratings higher than 20. Upgrading to a new AC unit can save money in the long run – plus, there are often rebates available for making the switch.

Signs It’s Time to Say Goodbye

The EPA recommends you replace your A/C system if it is over 10 years old to ensure you are operating at peak efficiency. Here are some other signs that it may be time for a new air conditioner:

You find yourself frequently calling for repairs, but your energy bills keep climbing. While regular maintenance is necessary, you don’t want to end up spending the price of a new home comfort system by constantly repairing an older one. An issue with your A/C or heater might not be as obvious as a drastic change in temperature. In fact, there are several possible signs that your HVAC is in need of repair, including strange smells, noises or leaks.

You take the EPA’s home assessment test and your Home Energy yardstick score is below 5. The test compares your home’s annual energy use to similar homes and will let you know if you’re paying more than you need to on your energy bills.

Every time your HVAC unit kicks on, your neighbors think you’re mowing the lawn. Newer systems tend to operate more quietly, so replacing an older system can cut down on the noise in your home. Some noises are normal, like the comforting hum of a perfectly functioning unit, or some clicking and tapping noises as the unit kicks on or warm or cool air courses through the ductwork. If you hear high-pitched whistling or screaming, however, turn off your heater or air conditioner and call your service provider immediately.

If you are in need of a new AC unit, you’ll want to choose one that is smart, energy-efficient and built to last. Carrier brand units have proven to be the gold standard in home comfort for decades and are a great place to start.
